Everything You Need To Know About Vow Renewals, From The Vow Whisperer

Couples choose to renew their vows for a variety of reasons — as a grand romantic gesture, to honor having overcome an obstacle in their marriage, to mark a milestone anniversary, to celebrate with loved ones who may not have been there the first time around … Truly, the possibilities are endless! Nevertheless, most vow renewals have one thing in common: they are ceremonial reaffirmations of a couple’s commitment to and love for one another. If you’re feeling unsure about whether a vow renewal is the right idea for you and your partner, keep reading! I’ll be unpacking how much “planning” goes into a vow renewal ceremony, why to consider obtaining a commemorative vow renewal certificate, and more.

Planning

When you imagine a vow renewal ceremony, it is undoubtedly quite different from what you’d expect of a full wedding ceremony. Typically, the fanfare is scaled back significantly, as most couples who chose to renew their vows have previously splurged on the lavish details for their wedding day. In spite of this, it is immensely important that you choose a venue well-suited to the size of your guest list, hire a photographer and/or videographer to capture key moments, and work with a professional to create your own vow renewal ceremony program. This program may include readings, speeches from loved ones, the exchange of new rings, and, of course, the exchange of new vows.

To sum it up — vow renewal planning is nowhere near as time-intensive as wedding planning, but that doesn’t mean you should dedicate any less thought to the process.

Paperwork

Unlike wedding ceremonies, vow renewal ceremonies are not legally-binding. For that reason, you don’t need to procure a marriage license or hire a seasoned officiant. However, many couples still opt for a professional to preside over their ceremony to ensure everything runs smoothly (a decision I certainly endorse!). Couples may also choose to obtain a commemorative vow renewal certificate, templates for which are readily available online (here is a bundle from The Wedding Celebrant Society to check out!). This way, you and your partner can have a tangible keepsake to remember this special moment in your marriage by — in spite of the lack of legal necessity.

Vows

Vow renewal ceremonies are an excellent opportunity to revisit the vows you delivered on your wedding day — to breathe them back to life with anecdotes from your lived experiences as a married couple. This can be particularly impactful if you were motivated to renew your vows by having overcome a hurdle in your marriage, because it allows you to infuse the words you shared at your original wedding ceremony with new meaning and create a true fresh start. Whether you choose to reread your old vows, write brand new ones, or blend your original language with some fresh insights, what matters most is that you deliver each word with a focus on growth and celebration.

Rings

Depending on your preference, a ring exchange may also be incorporated into your vow renewal ceremony. You and your partner can re-exchange your original wedding bands or gift each other new rings — whichever you prefer. If you’ve chosen to renew your vows to mark a milestone anniversary, you might even give your spouse a ring custom-adorned with a gemstone for each year of your relationship!

Experiences

With less of their budget dedicated to procuring full-service vendors and accommodating a guest list of hundreds, many couples choose to combine their vow renewal ceremony with a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Whether that means traveling back to your honeymoon destination, hosting a dazzling fireworks display in your own backyard, or something else entirely is up to you. As a lover of travel myself (with a particular appreciation for Italy’s Lake Como and the South of France), I cannot overstate how enriching it is to explore new places and cultures. So, why not journey to somewhere extraordinary as you and your partner reaffirm your loving bond? You won’t regret it!

Of course, vow renewals are not for everyone, and that is okay. Before deciding to hold a vow renewal ceremony, I encourage you to think long and hard about what renewing your vows will mean for you, your spouse, and your marriage going forward. And if, after this careful reflection, you still feel an authentic desire to honor and reinvigorate your connection through intentional celebration? Then by all means, go for it!

If you require any support as you revisit your vows or craft your vow renewal ceremony program, I would be more than happy to help.
