Why You Should Consider Hiring A Wedding Videographer

As you embark on your wedding planning journey, you will inevitably be faced with the question: do I need to hire a videographer in addition to a photographer? Of course, I often tell my clients, you do not need a videographer. The only true needs for a wedding are a loving couple and an officiant. If you are able, though, videographers can be a truly excellent addition to your big day. A skilled videographer will capture every moment of your wedding with a clear, intimate, and personalized gaze. The opportunity to relive one of the most important days of your life is, in my eyes, invaluable. If I haven’t yet convinced you, read on as I explore the reasons I recommend couples consider hiring a wedding videographer.

Captures Speeches and Vows

It seems fitting that I begin my endorsement of wedding videographers by highlighting their ability to capture, both visually and auditorily, your wedding vows. As I write in my very first post on this blog,, wedding vows are the heart and soul of a marriage ceremony. Whether your vows are religious, humorous, sentimental, or all of the above, they offer a true glimpse into the depth and magnitude of you and your spouse’s love. To have the exchange of these promises held in time for you to return to is a true gift, and one only a skilled videographer can give. Your wedding ceremony (or reception!) might also be a space for close friends and family to give speeches about you, your spouse, and your relationship. These speeches, too, can be captured and preserved by a videographer. Imagine: loving-recalled anecdotes, happy tears, and bursts of laughter, all accessibly eternalized. What more could you ask for?

Hiring a wedding videographer also means that folks who might not have been able to attend your wedding can still experience the beauty of your ceremony. Whether it be an ailing elderly family member or a good friend who is unable to travel, they will relish the opportunity to watch every moment unfold on film. Further, if you and your spouse plan to have children in the future, they will be equally as grateful for the chance to witness their parents’ wedding day.

Limits The Stress of Remembering Every Detail

I won’t mince words: your wedding day matters. It is a day of enormous significance in your life, and the impulse to hyperfocus on every detail is not an uncommon one. If you are to truly enjoy your wedding, though, you must grant yourself the capacity to live in the moment. This is a task made much easier by the guarantee of a wedding videographer capturing everything for you. A wedding film is a keepsake you can return to throughout your life, a curated collection of the day’s most striking and meaningful moments. The guarantee of receiving this final product will enable you to experience your wedding authentically and without the pressure to commit every single detail to memory.

The Immersion Factor

Speaking of that final product, a good wedding film will completely immerse viewers in the experience of your big day. The stray tear wiped from a cousin’s cheek as you walk down the aisle, the tender clasping of two bridesmaid’s hands, the hearty guffaw of a college roommate — each one-in-a-million moment primed and ready for you to dive back in. To return to this collection of moments, to relive the emotion and connection of your wedding day at any time, is a true privilege. For all of their strengths, wedding photographers alone are unable to achieve that immersive viewing experience.

Over the course of my time as a vow coach and officiant, I have worked with many couples who hired wedding videographers and many couples who have not. And while I am the first to admit that a videographer does not make or break a wedding, I also know a wedding film is one of the greatest gifts you can have. So, do you need a wedding videographer? No. But, if you are able, why not invest in a keepsake that will last a lifetime?
