Your Love Story Deserves Better Than AI

Words are the foundation of our relationships, our friendships, and the connections that intertwine our realities. Our words are our truth and ours alone. No two people’s voices are ever replicated in quite the same way. They emerge from our unique minds and are translated into something only we, as individuals, can offer: our voice. It is through words that we express love, gratitude, and empathy.

And yet, in a time of rapid technological advancement, I’ve begun to notice a shift. As a vow coach and ceremony planner, I work intimately with people during some of the most meaningful moments of their lives. Increasingly, I’ve heard the question: “Can AI help me write my vows?”

The short answer is yes, it can. But the more important question is: should it? It has become incredibly easy to generate messages tailored to any context. With just a few prompts, AI can produce something polished and surprisingly poetic. But speed does not equal sincerity. When we outsource something as personal as a love letter or wedding vows, we risk losing the very thing that makes them meaningful, the small and imperfect human details.

Expressing your thoughts isn’t always easy. In fact, it rarely is. But your partner is worth more than those few seconds it takes for AI to generate a message that is nothing more than a generic placeholder for something that should be deeply personal.

What I’ve found, both in my work and in emerging research, is that there’s an emotional cost to this convenience. People often feel a subtle sense of guilt when presenting AI-generated words as their own. This stems from what researchers call a “source-credit discrepancy,” where the origin of the message doesn’t align with who receives credit for it. In relationships, where being authentic and vulnerable are arguably the foundation, that disconnect matters.

While AI may be able to create a great message, it can’t capture you. It can’t replicate the tone of your shared history, the private language you and your partner have built over time, or the specific moments that define your relationship. Your message shouldn’t be applicable to anyone; it should only come from you.

Each relationship is entirely unique, and it deserves to be expressed in a way that reflects that uniqueness. My role as a vow coach is not to put words in your mouth, but to help you uncover the ones that are already there, the ones that feel true to you. The goal is never perfection. It is a connection. Because at its core, a vow is not a performance. It is a promise.

So if you find yourself tempted to let AI write your love letter, your vows, or your most meaningful messages, I invite you to pause. Ask yourself not just what sounds good, but what feels real. Lean into the discomfort of finding your own words.
